Personal message

On the 4th of January our dear friend Angel A’s home was attacked and set on fire causing severe damage to the building and destroying many of her belongings. This was done with malicious intention after her life was threatened previously. Fortunately she was not home and was unharmed. 

Angel A is a healer, artist and human rights and gender activist. Throughout her life she has contributed immensely to the lives of many in her community, and to those of us who are sponsoring this appeal. Angel A’s home is a place of healing and community in the township where she lives, from which she offers healing sessions, workshops for young people and where she is building a small library for young and old. All these services are offered freely, reaching those who need it most. 

As an artist, her livelihood has been negatively affected by COVID, and she has subsisted on a limited and unstable income, without the cushions of savings and insurance. 

She is not in a position to fund all the repairs which are now urgently needed for her home to be safe and liveable again and to replace all destroyed and damaged items -  (a new ceiling, roof parts, plastering, painting, rewiring, plumbing as well as clothes, furniture, bed, bedding and appliances)

Her home is her only material asset, and the damage that has been done to this and her possessions is devastating, both to her personally, and to her ability to continue her role in the community. 

So far she has experienced incredible support from her neighbours who immediately following the fire, have helped to repair the most urgent damage to secure the home and have offered her a place to stay. This is a testament to the role she plays in her neighbourhood. However, much more support is needed. 

We, as her long term friends, are raising funds to cover the repairs to her home, to replace lost clothes and furniture and to support her living expenses during this time of crisis. 

Amounts small or big are hugely appreciated. Any funds we raise over and above what’s needed will go towards supporting her work with the local community.
