In December 2023 my 16-year-old son, Andro Blaauw, was diagnosed with high-grade osteosarcoma, a rapidly spreading bone cancer. He Recently completed his 4th session; he faces a critical operation in March for upper leg prosthesis and knee replacement. Without it, the risk of lung metastasis is 100%, with a 5-year survival rate of only 23%. Treatment raises the survival rate to 60%, but Andro needs four more chemo sessions and must relearn to walk post-surgery. Despite chemo side effects, he stays positive. Osteosarcoma primarily affects osteoblast cells, prevalent in children and teens, properly treating osteosarcoma yields a 60-70% 5-year survival rate, while untreated cases have worse prognoses. Treatment side effects include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, infection risks, and potential surgery complications. The necessary operation is crucial to prevent cancer spread and improve survival chances. Securing funds for knee surgery is vital, especially as the medical aid does not fully cover the N$ 700,000 operation cost and this is without the 4 sessions of chemo after the surgery which an additional N$ 250 000. Support is urgently needed to ensure Andro receives the comprehensive treatment necessary for optimal recovery, improved long-term outcomes, and enhanced quality of life.
