On Sunday the 18th March, I will be commencing the “Tour de France” of mountain biking – the Absa Cape Epic. The Epic is an 8 Day mountain bike stage race and is renowned world-wide as literally “The Toughest Mountain Bike Race on the Planet”. As a mountain biker, it has always been one of my bucket list events and due to a very understanding wife and family, as well as many many hours of training and lots of support from my riding partner, I will now be able to line up alongside the world’s best mountain bikers to take on this monster challenge.

As part of the challenge, and to make the event meaningful beyond my own personal journey, I have decided to raise awareness by cycling and raising much needed funds for a charity that I have been associated with for a number of years and one which is very close to my heart - The Teddy Bear Foundation (“TBF”). The TBF provides specialized care, protection and support to young victims of sexual abuse. Their amazing staff assists young survivors and their families to make that healing possible by minimizing the effects of sexual abuse. For more information on the Teddy Bear Foundation, please click on the link - http://ttbc.org.za/

My goal is to raise R50,000 for the TBF which will greatly assist these children in their journey towards healing. I'm therefore reaching out to all of you to please give generously and donate to this extremely worthwhile cause.  Please donate to be a part of the journey and stop the cycle of abuse.

Some Details on the Absa Cape Epic                                                                      

The Absa Cape Epic is the most televised and largest full-service mountain bike stage race in the world and is also the only eight-day mountain bike stage race classed as hors catégorie (out of category) by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The Epic must be completed by both members of a two-person team with only 650 teams allowed to ride the race. The route changes every year, leading aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world through roughly 700 untamed kilometres of unspoilt scenery and 15 000m of accumulated climbing.

The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children (TTBC) originated in 1986 in response to an urgent need for medical examinations for sexually abused children. From there it has grown into a fully fledged service for abused children which includes: Forensic medical examinations, forensic assessments, counseling, psychological testing and more recently a diversion programme for youth sexual offenders. As an NGO, our concern is not only to support children and families affected by abuse but also to promote: “CHILD ABUSE NO MORE”.
