Personal message

My name is Amanda Louw and my relationship with the Breast Health Foundation (BHF) stems from my involvement with mammographer training in the Department of Radiography at the University of Johannesburg since 2008. During the past six years, BHF had supported me greatly with regard to mammographer training and it is now my turn to prove solidarity with their endeavours to promote breast cancer awareness and fundraising towards the improvement of breast health in various ways. 

Mammographers are those very special people who produce x-ray images of the breasts which are used for diagnosing various diseases, mostly in the breasts of women, but also men. The people involved in mammographer training are specialists from various fields, including the health professions, bioethics, human rights, cancer survivors, x-ray product vendors and many more. In my capacity as mammographer, radiographer and educator, I decided to specifically represent mammographers and radiographers and all educators on the Kilimanjaro climb, as these groups of people are integral in breast health and really deserve participation in this immense challenge. 

We were told we had to state our ages in our profiles (maybe people feel sorry for older women and donate more money?) and thus I tell you that my ID document says I was born in 1960. However, instead of teaching me to slow down, all those years taught me that time waits for no-one, that the best time to do something is while you are young and that today is the youngest I will ever be.

I am thus asking all of you with an interest in breasts – whether they are your own, your child’s, your parent’s, your spouse’s, your friend’s, your lover’s or your patient’s - to support my young spirit and donate generously towards the Kilimanjaro trip and Breast Health Foundation’s goals.
