GOING TREKKING for AFRIKA TIKKUN
Mickie, Andrew and daughter Rachel Jacobs will be part of a 7 person team trekking to Everest Base Camp in November. Hailing from the UK and South African residents since 2001, the Jacobs family will join fellow Brits and at 25, Rachel will significantly decrease the average age of the group. Each member is trekking to raise money for a chosen charity.
In January 2005, Mickie, Andrew and Rachel tackled Kilimanjaro via the Arrow Glacier Route and although Rachel was felled by altitude sickness on day 4, her Mum and Dad went on to summit. The family are all keen cyclists. Mickie and Andrew took up the challenge in 2005 and have ridden numerous races including the 94.7 and Cape Argus regularly. Rachel is a more recent recruit to the sport.
In March of this year, Mickie and Rachel chose Afrika Tikkun as their charity for the Cape Argus and raised almost R11, 000.
Afrika Tikkun’s Each One Teach One campaign aims to support children in Early Childhood Development Centres in Townships in Johannesburg and Cape Town. It costs R2160 to educate one child for a year. Mickie and Rachel therefore raised enough to sponsor 5 children by riding the Argus. Visiting the Diepsloot Centre was inspirational for Mickie. The facilities offered provide holistic education for the whole community, not just the little children. Thus inspired, the Jacobs family aims to at least double the original sum raised by completing the 18 day trek to Everest Base Camp.
If you would like to sponsor the Jacobs and support Afrika Tikkun’s Each One Teach One Campaign for Early Childhood Development then please go to www.beasport .co.za and click on ‘Mickie’.

Afrika Tikkun

Afrika Tikkun (AT) was founded in 1994 with the goal of developing and uplifting young people in disadvantaged communities resident in the Republic of South Africa. With like-minded partners, Afrika Tikkun aims to end child poverty and youth unemployment through a holistic approach that begins in early childhood and ends with productive adults accessing the economy. Our approach provides all-inclusive care (nutrition, health and social) services and helps SA’s youth achieve success with a model called Cradle-to-Career 360°, which has earned Afrika Tikkun recognition for being one of the most impactful organisations in South Africa. We operate from four centres in Gauteng and one in Cape Town.
