Personal message

About me.

I cannot really define myself to a geographic area. Growing up we were quite nomadic, which I loved. Right now my family stay in Hermanus and I stay in the moment.

The moment being in Johannesburg for the past 3 years. I enjoy being a sheep in the big city, but every now and then I must answer the call of the mountains, meaning I love the outdoors. Fun activities include running, writing, existential crisis and obviously slam poetry. My best quality is probably my elbows for which I have references.

Most of all, I enjoy having fun.

Why I am running for Afrika Tikkun.

As the great Mumford and Sons wrote: "I don't even know what I believe", which is true for most parts of my life. I do, however, believe in youth development and it would seem that Afrika Tikkun has come close to perfecting this. Their approach of focusing on child development from a very young age and supporting the individual throughout their lifetime is a program that creates sustainable change. Their high attendance rate throughout all their programs is evidence that something is done right. Also, I enjoy running, so I would have been running anyway.

My goal is to raise R2400, or 10 Cents for every metre gained in the 4 Peaks Mountain Challenge. The 4 Peaks Mountain Challenge is a 24km race over steep terrain in mid-September. My personal target for the race is to finish under 5 and a half hours, or an hour for every finger on my left hand. The half finger is silent.

This is not a reward for any of my efforts during the race, as people have done far more incredible things, but to reward all sweat and compassion that Afrika Tikkun has put into making a positive change in South Africa.

Afrika Tikkun

Charity Default Logo

Afrika Tikkun (AT) was founded in 1994 with the goal of developing and uplifting young people in disadvantaged communities resident in the Republic of South Africa. With like-minded partners, Afrika Tikkun aims to end child poverty and youth unemployment through a holistic approach that begins in early childhood and ends with productive adults accessing the economy. Our approach provides all-inclusive care (nutrition, health and social) services and helps SA’s youth achieve success with a model called Cradle-to-Career 360°, which has earned Afrika Tikkun recognition for being one of the most impactful organisations in South Africa. We operate from four centres in Gauteng and one in Cape Town.
