Personal message

Whilst cycling with my two brothers on a training ride in a very safe area in 2010, I too sustained a brain injury after being hit by a utility vehicle head on.  My survival rate was under 10% just after the accident, with the blessed support of my family & friends, I managed to survive this ordeal to tell my story.  Looking back at it now, recovery is very much like any path that we take in our lives, where we have to get from point A to point B, with the journey being characterized by both peaks and troughs. The difference in the road to recovery lies in the fact that the peaks and troughs are more extreme, especially on the negative side. They are also more compressed; they do not occur every day or every couple of days but rather every minute or every second when you are undertaking a simple, remedial task.  During these troughs you have to search for hope and inspiration in order not to lose sight of your end goal.

People who sustain a traumatic head injury (or acquired head injury like a stroke, aneurysm or brain tumor) usually go into hospital, from there they go to a rehabilitation facility and then from there home.  The family generally have this 'new' person to deal with, with little to no support.  Headway Gauteng offers this amazing lighthouse for families in this situation with the services they offer.  You can read more about them on their charity page.

I am so fortunate to be in the situation I am now that I intend on cycling in various cycle races to raise funds as well as awareness for this wonderful organisation.  Please help me to do so, your support will mean the world of difference to those that are not as fortunate as I am.

Charity Default Logo

Headway Gauteng is a registered charity organisation dedicated to offering various support programmes to survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families.

The vast majority of our injured members have sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident, sporting accident or assault. We also assist survivors of acquired brian injuries such as stroke or tumour. These people have led a full life up until the brain injury, which has caused permanent changes to physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural processes.
