13 Peaks Challenge in 48 hours for The Rhino Orphanage

On 22nd September it is World Rhino Day and, with the rhino population being threatened, a group consisting of myself (Oliver Kennedy-Smith), Burgert Maree, James Griffiths, James Mason, Keanan Walker, Corey Webb and Matthew Reid have decided to attempt to complete the 13 Peaks Challenge (a 110km trail consisting of 6-7km of vertical - which is the equivalent of hiking from base camp to the top of Mount Everest twice) in 48 hours. All the procceeds will go towards The Rhino Orphanage who are situated in the Limpopo Province and care for orphaned and injured baby rhinos. Their only aim being to release them back into the wild. We aim to start hiking on 21st September and end on 22nd September however this will depend on weather.

While poaching numbers have decreased since the lockdown in South Africa, this will not last long as with tourism being so low, funds to pay for anti-poaching is decreasing. With the international boarders re-opening it will make smuggling rhino horns to places like Vietnam, Laos and China much easier. And with people losing their jobs, they are going to be desperate for work and might turn to poaching as a desperate way to make money, so, poaching numbers might increase in the future.
